Project Overview
This is a call out for artists who want to help us create a community-based project that promotes peace and embeds solidarity with Palestine into the North East. As people, now is more important than ever to come together and use the power we have as a collective, to create noise and transformation. Art and culture is a powerful medium to incite change and raise the awareness of a community in a way that politics and words often fall short.
Our first exhibition in December will take place on free-standing walls in the city of Newcastle. We believe that the artwork we collect that represents the themes mentioned should be accessible to as many people as possible. The best way to do this is to use collective efforts to create an exhibition exposed to the outdoors and all who may pass through. If you have ideas about a visible location to hold this exhibition, please get in touch using our email.
We will also be taking additional physical and digital submissions in the new year to be a part of the project’s second phase- more details to be released soon!
how can you get involved?
Open to all ages, backgrounds and locations, this project sets out to unite our community, raise money, revive attention and importantly, shine a light on the rich and diverse culture of Palestine. To compassionately bring life, and humanity to the suffering.
Whether you are a painter, photographer, printer, drawer, sculptor, poet - we would like you to create a well informed and researched piece which points eyes to Palestine, centred on any of the following themes: daily life in Palestine, solidarity, liberation, decolonisation, celebration, and education.
We would appreciate a short email at zeytounarts@gmail.com detailing your concept especially if you’re having any doubts, need reassurance or direction. We’re happy to answer any questions. We will not accept any works that include explicit images of suffering, gratuitous violence, hate or racism. The media is saturated with images like this that anonymise and dehumanise the people involved. This is why after 76 years, our focus is on all of the human lives impacted and illuminating a culture that has so often been overlooked in the West.
Please explore the examples of artwork that communicate similar themes, along with the resources to learn more before conceptualising your piece. We have made these available on the website. We look forward to hearing from you!
